Pensioner dies after being struck by car

A 74-year-old man has died after being struck by a car in a crash on a south Liverpool road.

Police today confirmed the death of the man who was struck by a BMW in Belle Vale yesterday.

Emergency services were called to Childwall Valley Road and Hartsbourne Avenue at about 5.50pm to reports of a crash.

A huge emergency response was in the area for some time, as officers carried out an investigation.

A road closure was in place between the junction of Childwall Valley Road and Chelwood Avenue, and Childwall Valley Road and Barnham Drive.

Merseyside Police today said the pensioner sadly died at the scene after he suffered serious injuries in the incident. His next of kin have been informed.

The force said a 31-year-old man from Belle Vale was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

He has since been released under investigation.

Photos from the scene showed a large area sealed off as public transport was diverted.

Road closures have now been lifted.

It was reported by one witness at the scene last night that workmen rushed desperately to help the injured man.

A spokesman for Merseyside Police said: “We can confirm that the male pedestrian injured in a collision in Childwall yesterday (Monday 23 November) was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Next of kin of the man, aged 74, have been informed.
