M&S’ ‘awful’ Christmas advert as ‘awkward’ moment is spotted

Viewers are calling one of Marks & Spencer’s latest adverts “awful” after it features an “awkward” scene.

The high street retailer has released a series of festive clips across its social media, but its latest one has left viewers cringing. This year, M&S’ TV adverts are focusing on its food due to the pandemic leaving hopes of a normal Christmas in doubt.

One of the latest clips released features a married couple who enjoy a festive kiss in front of their horrified children, reports BirminghamLive.

Viewers have taken to social media to hit out at the advert. One user said: “I don’t think she likes him”.

Another said: “Awful advert.”

Others commented the chemistry was “non existent” and the kiss “so awkward.”

An M&S spokeswoman said: “We’ve made some short videos for social media about special & fun festive moments.

“This includes a mistletoe kiss between our married models wearing our family Christmas PJs.”

Last week, M&S explained its decision to only focus on its food offering on TV this year stating 2020 was not the year for “advertising fairytales”.

Sharry Cramond, M&S Food marketing director, said: “2020 has been a difficult year for all of us but at a time when charities are seeing their incomes fall significantly, we want to make sure that the M&S Food Christmas campaign builds on our existing charity partnerships and gives much-needed support to those that need it most.

“This is not the year for advertising fairy tales – our customers want this Christmas to be as special as possible but have told us that they want to know about the M&S Food must-haves and how we are supporting others.

“All charities featured in the TV ad will receive their donations ahead of Christmas so they can use the money immediately where it’s needed the most and we are indebted to the nine amazing actors who gave their time so willingly to support these great causes.”
