Investigating officers believe the man was earlier attacked in Firbeck after thugs had asked the victim for money while on his way to work.
He managed to stagger down the street to Ferndale, Birch Green, a third of a mile away.
The victim suffered multiple fractures and heavy swelling to his face and was rushed to Aintree Hospital in a serious condition. He’s now said to be recovering at home.
Following the attack, detectives released a photograph of the man and his horrific injuries in an attempt to persuade members of the public to come forward and help their enquiry.
