‘Hysterical’ witness saw man’s ‘head stamped on’ during attack

Shaken neighbours described horrific scenes after a man launched a frenzied attack on another man.

Police were called to Whitefield Drive in Kirkby yesterday evening (Monday) to reports of a violent street attack.

A police cordon and a forensics tent remained in place at the scene, opposite Kirkby train station, this afternoon.

Residents who overlooked the scene said they were disturbed by the sound of “shouting and screaming” in the street shortly after 11pm last night.

One woman said: “My teenage daughter looked out of the window, saw what was going on and came and woke me up.

“It was horrific. She was hysterical, shaking and crying.

“She saw a man lying on the ground and another man repeatedly stamping on his head.

Another neighbour who witnessed the scene and called police said: “At first it looked like a man was kicking the wall.

“Then I noticed a pair of feet on the floor, and that’s when I saw there was a person underneath.

“He was kicking and stomping on him. It seemed never ending.

Merseyside Police confirmed a man in his 50s was taken to hospital with head injuries.

A 27-year-old man from Kirkby was detained close by and arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent, and taken to a police station for questioning.

Detective Inspector Peter McCullough said: “Although a man has been arrested in connection with this violent incident, it is still vital that we speak to any witnesses or anyone who lives locally and may have captured some or all of the incident on CCTV, dashcam or other means.

“The victim’s condition is subject of assessment and we’re determined to establish exactly what happened and why.”
