Banners pop up in North Liverpool area slamming councillor

An investigation is underway as banners have popped up in north Liverpool criticising a well known councillor.

A number of large banners appeared in the Vauxhall area last week criticising long serving Labour councillor Joe Hanson.

The banners appeared on a number of buildings in the ward last week, with messages stating ‘Joe Hanson not for us’, ‘No more Joe Hanson’ and urged people to remove him from his council seat at Thursday’s vote.

Police have now confirmed that they been received an “allegation” into the banners which is now being “assessed” by officers.

A police spokesman said: “We can confirm that we are aware of an allegation received in relation to banners in the Kirkdale area.

“A report has been received and is being assessed by officers.”

Cllr Hanson said to the ECHO: “I have been touch with Merseyside Police about my own personal safety. I recently met with officers to pass on my concerns.

The ECHO understands that the force has offered advice to all parties.

Cllr Hanson, who is up for election on Thursday, left the Eldonian Community Based Housing Association on March 6.

Now Cllr Hanson has sent out a letter to households in the ward, in which he links the banners to his dispute with the Eldonians.

The letter reads: “This campaign against me has directly resulted from a situation involving the Eldonian housing group.”

The letter then makes reference to a governance review of the Eldonians which was published last October.

The letter reads: “This report highlighted serious issues that:

“No training was given to board members

“Issues with housing allocations being overridden

“The report was full of areas of concern about nonconformities and as a result the independent members of the board resigned leaving only tenant board members

“Another report from the audit company states that the sale of the village hall was not fit for purpose.”

The ECHO has seen a copy of the reports which identified a number of issues with the management of the Eldonians.
